R.L. Chartier and Pretty Katz Top BI Open Derby Wild Card
After marking a 213 in the first go of the Open Derby event on Pretty Katz, RL Chartier soon discovered that he’d have to post a 217 in the second round in order to ride the bubble to finals. But, when he drew up fifth in the sixth set of some testy cattle, he missed his mark by just a point. As his luck of late would have it, however, Pretty Katz and Chartier edged into a slot in the wildcard round, earning one last shot at a spot in the final’s lineup. And, the team ran with the opportunity when they laid down a 220 run that secured their inclusion in this year’s Open Derby finals. R.L. credits a lucky 4th draw in the ten-horse Wildcard round with having a good deal to do with the performance. “We tried to cut cows that had a little more challenge to them,” he said of his “going for broke” attitude on Wednesday. “We got lucky enough to cut decent cows. Our second cow was really tough and made the horse go stop both ways. It posed a challenge to my horse and it just kind of worked out.” Pretty Katz, a gelding by Pretty Boy Cat, made his debut at the NCHA Futurity with Chartier as a catch ride for Clint Allen. R.L. guided the horse to a 216.5 for a 5th place finish, which fell just below the 217 he posted on Hay Maker, owned by Scott Cusick, which took 4th.
